Detroit’s Numbers: 7… 4… 238,000,000… 500,000,000… 1,500,000…100,000… 100

March 13, 2016

Earlier this month Vox ran an article chock full of numbers and data that summarized the plight of Detroit Public Schools. Here are four that I selected as the most compelling:

  • 7… the number of years the Detroit public schools have been under the control of an emergency manager
  • 4… the number of emergency managers who operated Detroit Public Schools during that time period… NOT counting the one who will be taking office this month…. and… despite the numbers below… each one has left theist declaring that things are better
  • 238,000,000… Detroit’s current operating budget deficit, which is $71,000,000 more than it was before the last emergency manager took office to balance the budget/
  • 500,000,000… the amount of debt incurred by the public school system as of now.
  • 1,500,000… the number of people who left Detroit… who Vox characterized as mostly wealthy and white.
  • 100,000… the number of students who left Detroit Public schools during that time period.
  • 100… the number of vacant teaching slots in Detroit now…

I could probably add one more number:

  • 0… the probability that this problem will be solved any time soon….
