Rumors of Hillary’s Potential Education Secretary = Acid Indigestion
Here’s a blurb from today’s Morning Education RSS feed from Politico:
EDUCATION SECRETARY JACK MARKELL? Rumors about the next education secretary are flying – and while a lot of it is wild speculation, one name that has gotten buzz as a possible Hillary Clinton pick is Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. Markell was elected in 2008 and is now in the final year of his second term. He’s worked diligently to cement his education legacy, much of which lines up with Obama administration initiatives: He has been an unwavering supporter of the Common Core and high academic standards. He’s seeking an $11 million investment [http://delonline.us/1RqSXMF ] in pre-K in the state budget, and getting it is at the top of his priorities list. And he wants to expand [http://delonline.us/1R9jt8g ] a scholarship program to offer free community college more broadly. But does he want the country’s biggest education job? “You have to be asked first,” he joked to Morning Education. Markell is well aware of the rumors. But neither Clinton, nor anyone close to her, has approached him about the job, he said. Markell said he’s focused on the final months of his tenure. He’s not sure what he wants to do next, but if it’s education-related, Markell said he’d like an opportunity to work closer to students so he could have more of a direct impact. The position of education secretary seems a little far-removed, he said. “I’m not sure it’s the best leverage point,” Markell said.
Translation: I’d take it if offered… and given DFER’s unwavering support for “Obama administration initiatives” he looks like a good contender…. and the NCLB beat will go on until all schools are deregulated privatized charters…
