The Demise of the Walmart Greeter, the cashier, the bank teller… and a Host of Other Jobs…
Yesterday evening I wrote a post about the replacement of human operators with voice mail. Today’s NYTimes article on the development of $93,000 robot-greeters portends the demise of even more jobs. After reading this article and looking at the android working as a greeter at a department store, it is not difficult to imagine that any iterative job that can be reduced to an algorithm will ultimately be delegated to a robot. This means that Walmart greeters, cashiers, tellers, and a host of other jobs could be eliminated… and if we continue to believe that technology is our salvation in public education? It’s not too hard to see an android programmed with Khan Academy lessons working as a tutor for children in schools where a handful of humans oversee a horde of humanoids. Is this the world we want for our children?
