Staffing Decision Sends Chilling Signal of Future Ethos of US Education Department

January 27, 2017

While Senators are fretting about the future of Bestsy DeVos, the NYDaily News reports that President Trump is filling key USDOE departments with the likes of Teresa Unrue, a graphic designer in South Carolina and field organizer for Trump’s advance team. In her capacity as a leader in Mr. Trump’s campaign in that state, Ms. Unrue’s received several racist emails and twitter posts that “cracked her up”. Like these, for example:

One of the key functions of the USDOE is to deal with civil rights issues. If an individual who sends these kinds of messages is allowed to serve in a leadership position in that department how confident can Mexican-Americans and Muslims be about getting a fair hearing when they file a civil rights complaint? I’m filing this under “DeVos” because she will ultimately set the tone for the department. I sincerely hope her strong Christian beliefs will reflect those expressed in the Sermon on the Mount and that she will make certain that those facing discrimination will get a fair and just hearing and that political appointees like Ms. Unrue are left to count paper clips…
