I receive the Caledonia Record on line and find they often have op ed articles that stimulate my thinking about the current condition and future of public education. Earlier this week the paper published an op ed article by Daren Houck, headmaster at Lyndon Institute, the local high school that serves several small communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. In the article he notes that even though change is occurring rapidly, one thing remains constant: students need to learn to be adaptable, creative, and to master “soft” skills as well as the traditional HS content. In an era where test scores continue to be the dominant metric, readers in the Northeast Kingdom should head Mr. Houck’s advice.
