Sports Stadiums Get Millions… Classroom Supplies Slashed… Is Democracy Serving Us Well?

August 26, 2017

A post last week by Diane Ravitch included the link to an article describing a new multi-million dollar sports stadium in Katy TX, an investment of taxpayers money that she summarized as follows:

Football stadiums matter more than teachers, the arts, class size, science, mathematics, or history.

Commenters mostly agreed with her analysis, but from my perspective the examples of public support for sports stadiums they offered underscore how messy democracy can be… But it also serves as an illustration of how willing the public is to be distracted from the long term issues facing our nation. It makes me wish that public schools had the same following as the Red Sox and Patriots. Wouldn’t it be great to see adults parading around in t-shirts and billed hats with the names of their public schools instead of being outfitted in t-shirts emblazoned with their favorite sports teams or the logos of their favorite t-shirt manufacturers?
