Andrew Cuomo is NOT a “Progressive” and NOT What Public Education Needs

I read an editorial in yesterday’s NYTimes and felt a cold shiver: it seems that Andrew Cuomo, a huge fan of charters, of privatization of public education, of the test-and-punish policies beloved of “reformers”, is casting himself as a “progressive” as he prepares for another gubernatorial election in 2018 and, presumably, a run at the Presidency in 2020. Should Mr. Cuomo run and win, it would not be surprising to see him nominate Eva Moskovitz as Secretary of Education and to see him advocate the neoliberal reinvention ideas put forth three decades ago by Al Gore… ideas that reinforce the notion that the private sector can more effectively address the challenges governments face than “bureaucracies”. Should he or any neoliberal like him secure the nomination for the Democrats and cast themselves as “progressives” it will be time to cast that term aside in the same way the term “reformer” has been rejected.
