Today, I Offer a Link to a Texas Minister Whose Anti-Privatization Movement Echoes MLK’s Call for Racial Justice

Yesterday Diane Ravitch shared Robert Garrett’s article from the Dallas News that describes the work being done by Charlie Johnson, a Southern Baptist minister who has taken it upon himself to take on the Tea Party Republicans who are privatizing public schools. The article describes Mr. Johnson’s effort to elect moderate GOP candidates who support the funding of “government schools” run by the “educarats” who are demonized by the right wing of that party.

As one raised in Presbyterian and Methodist churches and, therefore, familiar with the teachings of Jesus, I find it hard to believe that He would favor privatization if it meant the poor treatment of the needy. Mr. Johnson shares that view and is mobilizing other church leaders to join him in pushing back against the tide of privatization in Texas. Here’s hoping he prevails!
