The Fruits of Deregulation: Indiana Teenager Registers a Charter School with the IN Department of Education

March 8, 2018

A post from Diane Ravitch yesterday described how Leo Cavinder, a 13-year old teenager in Indiana registered his own charter school with the Indiana Department of Education and secured a non-public school number… a gambit that underscores what happens when deregulation is in place. A Department Spokesperson was quick to point out that no money was provided to the school but DID acknowledge that it was troublesome that a 13-year old was able to register and secure a number so easily. As Ms. Ravitch noted at the end of her post:

Leo showed that Indiana has no standards at all when it comes to approving school corporations. Everyone welcome, including crooks, frauds, and con artists.

Leo also showed how the deregulation beloved of privatizers, the Koch brothers, the GOP, and our current administration is deeply flawed. I await a full throated protest from the opposition party, but fear that the Democrats are as beholden to the pro-privatization donors as the GOP.
