Axios does a good job of teasing out all the ways schooling from home favors students raised in affluence over those raised in poverty. The one factor that is particularly important is that low wage parents work at jobs that cannot be done remotely while the great majority of parents who earn in excess of $70,000 can work from home. When children are unable to work without adult supervision— which is the case for most elementary school students– having a parent at home can make a huge difference. Unless a means of addressing this inherent inequity is devised the gap between children of affluent parents and children of low wage parents will widen.
