From the outset of the pandemic the media have focused their reporting on the disparities of remote learning on the “digital divide”. But as this eNews article notes, in the end the biggest problem with remote learning had nothing to do with internet access, it had to do with engagement:
Two-thirds to three-quarters of teachers said their students were less engaged during remote instruction than before the pandemic, and that engagement declined even further over the course of the semester.
Until we face the reality that human connection is more important than internet connection we will continue to limit our solutions to inequity to buying more “things” as opposed to ensuring that the “things” we are buying are being used well and helping to address the problems we are trying to solve.
