It’s time for an ambitious national investment in America’s children: Investments in early childhood care and education would have enormous benefits for children, families, society, and the economy

According to EPI, the data from this report from 2016 are as relevant today as they’re then. While I am not at all confident it would be easy t “sell” universal preschool education, I am fairly certain convincing voters of the need to universal preschool child care might be possible and am absolutely convinced that universal preschool CHILD CARE would be better for children and the economy than universal preschool EDUCATION. Why? Because preschool education as it is currently offered on a half-day basis, would complicate the lives of working parents, adding more stress to a situation where families are already strained. Also, many affluent parents are already enrolled in full-day preschool-daycare programs which are more convenient for them in terms of their work schedules. These parents would not be enthused about trading their existing program for one that offered less convenient partial coverage for their child care needs with no marked improvement for the educational programming their children are currently receiving. My conclusion: to make this work for all and to encourage the kind of demographic mix that our schools currently lack I would push first and foremost for universal child care.
