The Needless Debate on Reopening… and the POTUS Diversionary Tactic of Blaming of the Union

August 14, 2020

The NYTimes article this morning by Eliza Shapiro describes how the POTUS bungled the reopening issue… but effectively shifted the focus away from HIS mis-steps and amplified his argument (and the GOP’s) that UNIONS are to blame for the inconvenience many parents will experience. This is clearly preposterous!

The article didn’t make the key point about the reopening debate: If the POTUS had insisted that we all stay home for 6 weeks in late March, and then wear masks and maintain social distancing for an extended period thereafter we might not be having ANY debate about reopening… Instead he politicized mask wearing, pushed the decisions on closures to the states while cheering on Governors who ignored the peril of remaining open, and, consequently, the US has more deaths and spread than any developed nation on earth. The teachers’ unions didn’t do that… the POTUS and the heedless GOP governors did…. and that is not a political statement… it’s a fact.
