Closing the digital divide seems to be the latest fast, cheap and easy way to close the gap between students attending schools in affluent districts and students attending schools in poverty stricken areas. As this article indicates, though, those schools serving affluent students are not offering ONLY broadband, computers and other forms of internet based instruction, they provide the most important factor of all: contact with a human being who is capable of understanding their unique needs. Giving children raised in poverty the same technology as their more affluent counterparts will not yield the equity sought by progressive minded voters unless it is augmented by live human beings who can provide the support and feedback needed to provide a quality education.
