Note to Rand Paul: Schools Need $$$ to “Take Appropriate Measures” to Open

September 10, 2020

In his op ed piece for The Hill, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul urges schools to follow the lead of a handful of two exemplary charter schools and to open up.

Both of these schools share some ideas — they socially distance as much as possible, including not changing classrooms as often and having lunch in their classroom instead of a cafeteria. They temperature check and health quiz every child, every day. They have remote learning enabled to make it easier for sick kids to stay home and still learn.

But in his plea for reopening he is neglecting several realities.

  • He is assuming that ALL public schools have the same amount of space as the two exemplary schools making it possible to operate “…socially distance as much as possible”.
  • He is assuming that ALL public schools are designed in a way that enables them to provide “…lunch in their classroom instead of a cafeteria.”
  • He assumes that ALL public schools have the staff available to provide a “…temperature check and health quiz every child, every day”
  • He assumes that ALL public schools have PARENTS transport children, as they do at one of the schools he cites
  • And last, but not least, he assumes that ALL public schools have enough money to provide all of the above AND PPE for students and staff

I also wonder why Mr. Paul didn’t mention the mask mandate that one of the schools, Kentucky Christian Academy, has in place. I guess libertarianism doesn’t apply to school children.
