NY Regents Tests Cancelled for 2020-21. Why? “Because they Cannot Be Offered Safely, Equitably, and Fairly”
NY Chalkbeat writer Alan Petersime opens his article in the cancelation of the NY Regents with these two paragraphs:
The state education department has canceled New York’s high school exit tests that were scheduled for January, Interim Commissioner Betty Rosa announced Thursday.
January’s Regents exams cannot be offered “safely, equitably, and fairly” due to the pandemic, as schools are offering only some days of in-person instruction, Rosa said in a memo to school districts. She did not, however, say what will happen with Regents in June and August, nor what will happen with the grades 3-8 English and math tests that are typically administered in March and April.
This just in, Ms. Rosa: if equity and fairness standards were applied to the administration of the Regents tests they would never be used as exit exams… and if equity and fairness was the standard for funding ALL NYS schools would be funded at a level comparable to the most affluent districts in the state.
MAYBE the incoming Biden administration will take a hard look at the use of standardized testing as the primary metric for determining the quality of education and take a hard look at the way federal funds are distributed so that there is an arc toward equity and fairness. I’m not holding my breath… but I still can dream.
