Jesse Jackson’s Recommendation to Restore Eisenhower Era Commission on Civil Rights COULD Make a Difference

December 9, 2020

Jesse Jackson’s Op Ed published in Common Dreams calls for the Biden administration to breathe new life into a national commission that the Reagan administration dismantled as part of an effort to devise and implement a range of interdependent policies in ALL departments. While the essay makes only a passing mention of public education, it’s emphasis on the need for a coordinated inter-departmental effort to undo the damage done over the past forty years is crucial. As noted in many posts, it is difficult to disentangle school improvement and desegregation from housing policies, the well being of children from health and human services policies, the opportunity for racial equality from voting rights, and the equitable redistribution of resources without looking through the lens of civil rights.

My thought: it would be beneficial to the civil rights movement if there was a focus on actions needed to change our spending, housing, and health policies instead of focussing on the misdeeds of police, misdeeds that arguably stem from the problems that manifest when our priorities are skewed.
