Conservative Youth Group Protests Temporary Suspension of Books… But Why Now and Why Here?
Fox News reports that a “conservative youth group” is concerned about the actions of the Burbank schools who have invited Bipoc parents to weigh in on the question of whether a group of books should be removed from the syllabus because they include the “N” word.
On Sept. 9, Burbank announced “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,” “The Cay” and “Of Mice and Men” will no longer be used in classrooms, at least temporarily, after four parents, three of them Black, challenged their use as racist.
This list is not much different from ones Christian fundamentalists wanted banned in years past. Funny, I don’t remember Fox News or “conservative youth groups” supporting the retention of these books when the protests were lodged by evangelicals.
