GOP Dominated State Legislatures Push Back Against Social Justice… But the Arc of Moral Universe Continues is Slow Bend Toward Justice
Michelle Goldberg’s NYTimes article about the Idaho legislatures action to withhold funds from Boise State because it is offering courses that “…deal with social justice”. This article could just as easily have cited the New Hampshire legislature who introduced HB 544 designed to “…prevent educators from teaching about systemic racism and sexism in public schools and state-funded programs.”
This just in to legislators in GOP led states and pundits who fret about such laws: these topics were NEVER taught in public schools when I was growing up and were seldom offered until recently. And yet… following the election of a misogynist who bragged about grabbing starlets by their genitals tens of thousands of women and men participated in marches in cities across our country… and following the murder of an unarmed black man by an armed policemen witnessed on television screens and computers, blacks and whites of all ages gathered in marches and vigils across the country to mourn his death.
Social justice and sexism were never taught in schools before now yet hundreds of thousands of men and women of all ages and races spontaneously rallied in support of women’s rights and the rights of minorities. And similarly no courses were ever offered on “gay rights” or the fair and just treatment of LGBTQ individuals… yet there is widespread support for those individuals.
So go ahead and try to pass laws that defy the arc of the moral universe… because it cannot and will not be stopped in its slow bend toward justice.
