A Meme That Needs Another Correction: Legality Isn’t a Guide to Morality BUT Legality Also Isn’t a Guide to Actions

March 28, 2021

I have a Facebook which I look at no more than fifteen minutes a day. I confess to enjoying the pictures my daughter, siblings, nephews and nieces post and the articles several of my kindred spirits post. Being on Facebook also gives me a sense of what kinds of memes are floating around, fortunately on “both sides” since I’ve managed to maintain relationships with some Facebook friends who are more conservative than I. A few days ago this meme appeared on a couple of friends pages:

I found this to be incomplete… because, as the title of this post indicates, legality isn’t a guide to conduct. Genocide of the kind that led to the holocaust is illegal by international law, yet it continues. Slavery persists in many parts of the world and wage-slavery arguable exists in all parts of the world. And, as often noted in this blog, segregation might be illegal, but the actions of our culture and society speak louder the the edicts handed down by the courts and legislators decades ago. No, we don’t allow redlining and we DO claim to be a wholly desegregated and inclusive society… but the actions of a loud and sizable minority continue to undercut the laws of the land and the morality of every moral code. As long as we accept the current paradigm as “the way things are” we continue to have “the way things are” BE the paradigm. Laws don’t guide our treatment toward each other and cannot dictate morality… only our hearts and our compassion for each other can do that.
